On the 24th of September this year (2005), I was on my way back from a wedding with Ibukun , when on the Apapa- Osodi expressway I saw something I thought at first was a tree trunk. As we drove closer I realised that what I thought was a small tree was actually a human being.
I turned my face away but not before I could make out the feet. I cant tell if it was male or female but I was thoroughly upset. Dead! Dead! Dead! This was not the corpse of a goat (we had seen one somewhere in Maryland that same day) but a person, a living soul. A human being! A Nigerian…………… perhaps the only reason why the body was on a major expressway in broad day light with cars driving past and pedestrians walking past.
For reasons I couldnt express, I became teary eyed. A Human being with hopes, aspirations, dreams…… I debated whether to put this on my blog for a while and decided to. Still wondering If i’ll publish this…………. or delete this even as I write.
Life isn’t sacred anymore in Nigeria. Its not an unusual sight on our roads anymore. Our minds are usually too busy to process the thought that this body belonged to a fellow being, a man created in God’s image. Why am I rambling on and on? What can be done to stop this? To ensure that such bodies are not desecrated by rodens and tires , not left to rot right in the sight of everyone else? Whose responsibility is it? Mine? Yours ? The Governments?
Do we need a law empowering one of the numerous units/ministries to undertake this responsibility without the stupid arguments about whether the body is found on a Federal or State road or on the boundary of Local government councils?
Enough!
