Defer your dreams…

It is said that a dream deferred is a dream denied. That may be true when you’re living your life for yourself. But when it comes to living life for the benefit of generations to come, deferring a dream may be the very thing that’s required.

Got the quote above from a tribute to the Late Coretta King (Martin Luther’s widow). She forsook her dream & career dream (to be a Professional musician) when she was thrust into limelight after his assasssination.
I’m thinking about her and Nigeria… and wondering how many of us would be willing to give up our SELVES for this nation. I don’t remember if i’ve put this down in words before but the truth is that our orientation as Nigerians is self-centered.
Its difficult to cooperate as a group for our common good. Like Funmi Iyanda once inferred, a Nigerian deemed to be successful (in this era) is actually one who has become his own Local government Chairman, his water corporation, his NEPA or is it Power Holding?, his Security outfit.
A lot needs to be put into place just to enjoy the basics of life and that is why there is so much corruption in the land. NEPA (forgive me this name has stuck!) officials are looking for what they can get, therefore they are more effective as light disconnectors instead of light suppliers. I guess its more lucrative to get ‘egunje’ for reconnections. Thieves keep stealing cables & equipment because the ‘big’ men who are supposed to ensure that ‘life’ is smooth are more interested in lining their pockets and insulating themselves from the hardships instead of spreading this wealth around (It’s not theirs anyway) by doing the RIGHT things!
I wonder how many of us are willing to give up ‘Comfort’ and sacrifice for Nigeria because truly looking for change in Nigeria and a desiring a better Nigeria for generations unborn will only happen when we defer our selfish dreams.
