Nigeria now…

I have left off writing anything (positive or negative) about our dear big country for a while. Its an interesting country no doubt to put things plainly.
I have not wanted to write because when it concerns Nigeria, even if I start off on the positive axis, I slide down x really fast.

Right now I just have a few questions. Joining the facebook community late last year (yeah that addictive virtual world that connects you with long lost friends and ever present buddies) brought me face to face with reality. It is not as if I didnt know but I guess it just made me sit down and admit that Nigeria’s best and brightest are outside its shores.

I just have questions and I would like answers. Many of my classmates from Primary school, a lot more from Secondary school and I dare to say the bulk of my mates from University are sitting comfy outside this nation. Not washing plates or corpses but living the dreams that would have otherwise died a terrible death staying in this country.

I am amazed at the abundance of talent that other countries in Europe, South Africa, the UK and the US have amassed from our great country Nigeria.
The numbers are overwhelming and I wonder if our leaders are aware that daily the hope and future of our nation are boarding planes out of this country never to return for good.

The dearth of doctors is the most readily noticed but what of financial analysts, philosophers, sociologists, etc who could chart a path for us. Its a thing of pride to have beside each persons network a country other than Nigeria. Networks also include Universities outside the shores of this nation and ivy league institutions whose fees run into thousands of dollars.

I imagine the capital that has left these shores for the pursuit & purchase of golden certificates from schools abroad. What if our universities had been maintained and remained world-class, that money would have done us a world of good?
There are Nigerian communities everywhere in this world, even the remotest regions.

Its a thing of pride but it should also be a thing of concern. It certainly does not seem to be as a picture of our president being welcomed by representatives of the Nigerian community to Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum was displayed prominently on the front page of a leading Nigerian newspaper.

    Hi Lamikay,

I’m very glad u started posting again. (See, I’ve persevered!)

I am almost apologetic that I live overseas. The key word…is “almost”.
