Sabon Birnin – 2

Its taken me more than a year to write a sequel to my first post on Sabon Birnin. The border town where I served for a whole year.
It has taken Lagos stress for me to appreciate the peace, quiet and tranquil ambience of that village.
Though I hardly remember my last night in that town, I cannot forget my first night. It was grashopper season, well hopper season because every flying insect came to greet us. Our hosts the village doctor and his wife had sent off for a mosquito net the minute we arrived bearing a note from my guardian in town.
I wondered why as I do not remember spending a full night under a net except when I was in boarding house. It soon became very clear. After supper we retired to the room that had been reserved for us, the windows were left open because it was hot and we were ensconced under the net.
All of a sudden I heard a great flapping noise, and Lara my friend jumped up scaring me out of my wits. One of our winged friends had breached the security of our net. It was big and refused to stay in one place. After banging about and killing the offensive creature with a book on the bed, we went back to bed albeit with one eye open.
It was a nice welcome to a quiet town.
