To show how superstitious we as a people are, my mum says a typical pregnant Nigerian will not mention when she is due to give birth, neither friend nor foe is privy to this information, for fear that ‘someone’ else might be listening and who knows what peoples intentions towards one are.
Even working mothers-to-be are careful to mention when their mandatory maternity leave will take place. It is a well-kept secret (even when the ‘belly’ has descended and it is obvious to the initiated that the baby will soon ‘drop’).
Not so our western counterparts, if you sit on a bench in the park and a preggie female sits besides you, you’ll probably leave the bench with more information than you bargained for and that from a total stranger….
Well this story came home to me when an elderly neighbour commented on the fact that the news of the president on the front pages of newspapers was not ‘wise’ at all. As she put it, those who hide their sicknesses well have cause to be afraid, talk less of those whose ‘bad news’ is publicised.
With the number of careless, untrue stories being bandied about and if our ‘african’ theories are to be believed we have a lot to fear! For if words (theories) alone could kill….hmmm
If the Federal Government had given us the One and True story there would probably be fewer theories ‘killing’ our President.
PS: I do pray that whatever ails Mr. Presidents will be cured soon so he can come back home to resume Governing us. I also pray for a transparent government, honest and just officials who would tell the truth despite of the consequences.
