Chinese milk!…

I have found myself in the last couple of days checking and cross checking the source of ALL dairy products (biscuits, milk, yoghurt, butter) consumed in my household.
I have been very vigilant because my daughter is just over 1 year and quite obviously still has a very milky diet.

I have stuck to the un-chinese products she’s taken all this while and I have stayed far away from any new unknown ‘milky’ products. No offence meant to my bright eyed optimistic ‘New Nigeria’ brethren but this is NIGERIA!

I am yet to hear any pronouncements on the safety of all products imported into the country by our chinese kin by any government official, I am yet to hear of a ban on all dairy products from that source (as some of our fellow African countries have done) until the whole unfortunate saga comes to an end . I have listened closely for any assurance from the people at the top that Nigerians have nothing to worry about…

I have been ‘wanting to write’ a post on all things Chinese for a while andthis milk saga has hit too close to home. Its bad enough that I am wary about my daughters toys wary of purchasing any with any paint (because of lead poisoning), clothes for the same reason and now I have to watch what she eats.

I hope that there is some form of testing of all CHINESE products which cross the shores of our dear country. I hope that our officials are not being swayed by the chinese dollars flooding the country and boosting our economy so much that they turn a blind eye to substandard goods or worse killer foods!

I hope so, however in a country where medical records are not kept how can we be so sure that children have not succumbed to Melanin poisoning already! Nigerians should begin to question and ask safety organisations questions. NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Control) should publish a list of milk products currently imported and whether they have been tested or not!

I hope someone is listening!

I was told by my father a few days ago that Dora Akunyili went to China not too long ago to discuss their preparation of drugs for Nigerians. Apparently she was hindered left and right and subsequently frustrated so when she came back home she banned all drugs from China… I’m not sure if food products were included in the ban.

I share the same plight with you. Another ‘wahala’ I’ve been dealing with which is mainly psychological is “What if…?” Hope you understand. I even had a scary dream…Hope I’m not being paranoid.

I’ve drawn a list of what should not come near my household…lol. I have tried not to make wife apprehensive at the same time.

We have to take responsibility for our action/inaction, you know. Our government seems to be overwhelmed with “more important” issues.
