I remember coming home from work many times and regaling my mum with details of how my day went expecting her to commiserate accordingly and massage my ego by responding to my rants about events in a comforting manner. Instead of what I expected, there would be silence or in some instances smiles and I’d look at her exasperated and say ‘It’s not fair!’ to which she would reply calmly (further exasperating me) and utter ‘Toyin, life is not fair’… so much for my belly aching!
This morning I had to get out of my car and get soaked as my car was hit by the Lagos nuisance ‘keke-marwa’ (taking over from Okadas) and my front bumper was taken off its hinge albeit not completely. I couldn’t move forward as it was hanging down and it could not be put back up because several screws were missing. I think the whole incident was not as annoying as the Keke Marwa passengers insisting that it was because I refused to stop.
The only reason the accident occurred was because I stopped to allow the impatient km-man (who was on the opposite side of the road) come over to the legal side in-front of me. Instead of maneuvering properly and using his mirrors, he went off with my bumper.
I decide to look on the good that happened as a result and give thanks instead of getting bogged down with what is fair or not fair.
- A BRT bus stopped just in time and part of the front of my vehicle which had fallen off was saved from being crushed.
- Some very enthusiastic ‘agberos’ helped to ‘hang up’ my bumper and set me on my way in time to make it to my office before 8.
- Its been a while since I’ve been beaten by rain!
- Junk in my boot served some purpose…an old usb cable was used to hold my bumper in place.
- The rain stopped before I got to the office. Something I had prayed for as I started out.
- Thank God it wasn’t worse!
